Books have been written on the subject, and videos and films made. In more recent times, the scandal between President Clinton and one of his interns has brought about the same worn out eponym to Monica Liewinski. Unfortunately, life itself has furnished plenty of examples to establish this negative vocabulary: not very long ago, Amy Fisher, named the “Long Island Lolita”, was convicted for having shot the wife of Joey Buttafuoco, her older male friend, and spent seven years in prison. The word (often lower-cased to ‘lolita’) connotes badness for both sexes, but it is especially demeaning to women.
‘Lolita’, the now word, is a term used to describe a certain type of young woman-usually a teenage girl with precocious sexual drive that proves ruinous to the life of a sinful older man. I explained to her that she is more than welcome to wear the fashion… But in the community, we can't have an incident like that happen because it will put the public eye on us.‘Lolita’ has become a recognizable word in the English language, having taken up a life of its own, with ever widening connotations and rarely if ever a reference to its literary progenitor. "I know she had mental-health issues, and I had a talk with her after. After an incident on the way to a meetup over the summer at Ripley's Aquarium in Toronto, they had to ban a new member after she yelled a racial slur at a black security guard. "Everyone who joins our community is classified as a part of a family we always look out for one another, treat everyone with the utmost respect." Meagan says that they also try to keep everything kid-friendly, especially since some of their members have young children.īut at times, they have had serious issues. "My girlfriend Sophia was one of the people who started this community about five years ago… I was one of the first that got pulled into the fashion and helped make what it is today," Meagan, 20, tells me.
